Sand Casting

Sand casting is a widely used manufacturing technique for creating metal parts.

Ancient coins were not sand cast. Sand casting was invented during the Sui Dynasty in 6th-century AD China, but it was not known to the ancient people in the Mediterranean region. Therefore, any sand-cast Roman or Greek coin would always be a modern fake.

Sand casting became prevalent in China, where nearly all Chinese coins from the 6th to 19th century were produced using this method, and the Chinese became masters at it.

Ancient coins, especially those from Rome and Greece, were primarily struck on cast flans rather than sand-cast, and their production methods did not involve sand casting.
