DIAMOND DRESSERS
How to use a diamond grinding wheel dresser
Proper use of a diamond tool will increase the tool life and decrease your tool costs.
For best results dress the grinding wheel dry, or under a full flood of coolant. Starting dry and then turning on the coolant will thermal-crack and ruin the diamond dresser.
Start where the grinding wheel is largest, usually around the center. Bring the diamond to the highest point on your grinding wheel and touch-off.
Diamond penetration should be around .001” per pass. Take 2 passes, then take a final pass of .0005”. This will usually result in a good commercial finish. For a finer finish take two more passes without any further diamond penetration.
For a slightly rougher finish traverse across the face of the wheel quickly.
For a slightly finer finish traverse across the face of the wheel slowly.
After dressing the grinding wheel drag a wooden stick across the face of the rotating wheel to remove any swarf or particles still stuck to the wheel.
Diamond dressers should be set at a 10° - 15° angle in the direction of the rotation of the grinding wheel, below the centerline about 1/32 of an inch.
Coming into the wheel with the diamond straight, not tipped, will flatten the point of the diamond.
Rotate the dresser in the holder often. This will help to continually lap the diamond into a sharp point.
Always wear eye protection when using diamond dressers.
