Use a #89 drill as the tap drill for new holes in soft material with a depth of 2/3’s of the major diameter. You may need to go larger for a deeper hole or harder material.

HINT: Tapping small holes is very tricky. You may have to experiment with the tap drill size, depending on how deep you are tapping, how hard or soft the material, and the accuracy of your set-up.

The difference between the root and the crest of the thread is very small. A little drill run out and you wind up with an over-sized hole and no threads. A dull drill or center drill may work-harden the part, making the tapping process more difficult. Tapping fluid, oil, or liquid soap is highly recommended.
