Ball Pein hammers have one flat face, one round face, and a hardwood handle. The face of a ball pein hammer is usually harder than that of a claw hammer. The head is made of heat treated high carbon forged steel.

A ball-pein hammer is also known as a blacksmith's hammer, an engineer's hammer or a machinist's hammer. It is distinguished from a point-peen hammer or chisel-peen hammer by having a round head.

The original function of the ball pein hammer was to peen riveted or welded material, though the process of peening has become less common in today’s metal fabrication.
