Use a #77 drill as the tap drill for new holes in soft material with a depth of 2/3’s of the major diameter. You may need to go larger for a deeper hole or harder material.

HINT: Tapping small holes is very tricky. You may have to experiment with the tap drill size, depending on how deep you are tapping and the accuracy of your set-up. The difference between the root and the crest of the thread is very small. A little drill run out and you wind up with an over-sized hole and no threads. A dull drill or center drill may work-harden the part, making the tapping process more difficult. Tapping fluid, oil or liquid soap is highly recommended.
